Choose ONE of the following topics below and write your Discursive Essay: 250-300 words

  • Technology is replacing human interaction
  • Medical advances will soon mean that people will live until they are 200 years old.
  • Individual countries do not have the right to interfere with the affairs of another country.
  • Students, not the state, should pay university tuition fees.
  • Women should be promoted to top jobs in business and politics before men.
  • E-books: the end of the word as we know it

B: Write a summary. Watch a video about Vanessa Mae and write an email to an English-speaking friend who hasn’t watched the video, summarising it in about 100 words.  WATCH THE VIDEO 

3. UNIT THREE  

A: Proposalwrite a proposal for improving the area where you live: the town council intends to spend money improving your area, and invites residents to send in proposals. In your proposal you should outline any problems there are, and make recommendations for improving the current situation. You can find more ideas for writing proposals on page 41. UNIT FIVE  

Narrative: Choose at least one of the options below and write one or more narratives. You will get more ideas on how to write narratives on p 58 SB. You will also find useful language  HERE .  (150-200 words) (Deadline: 24 Jan)

a) Identify a significant experience in the life of a family member or a friend and write about it. 
b) Write a narrative which starts with the following sentence:
“I opened the only present that was left and realized that from then on my life would take a turn”.
c) Write a narrative about a memorable moment in your life.

UNIT SIX

UNIT SEVEN  

A Leaflet: You own a place where people go to switch off from their daily routine. What type of place is it? Do people go there to learn something or just to relax? UNIT EIGHT

  • A Forum Entry: Major decision in life: Go to page 101 on your students book and read the forum entry: 8 A, then write about a major decision in YOUR life (250-300 words) (Deadline:  4 April)
  • Mediation: TOPIC: THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE: Where did English come from? You have been asked to write a contribution for the class blog explaining the history of the English language. You can watch this video or others you may find. Afterwards summarise the most relevant information. (150 words)

A Review:  You have been asked to write an exhibition review for the school magazine. (From the student’s book pg. 109)

    1. Telecommuting refers to workers doing their jobs from home for part of each week and communicating with their office using computer technology. What are the arguments in favour and against telecommuting?
    2. In your opinion should government intervene in the rights of the individual with regard to health and security?
    3. In many countries, when someone gets old, they often go to live in a home with other old people where there are nurses to look after them. Sometimes governments pay for this care. Who should be responsible for our old people? Give reasons. Use specific reasons and details to explain your choice.
